What is Business DSL (SDSL)?
SDSL stands for Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line. SDSL needs just one twisted
pair (line), whereas some other earlier DSL standards needed two, or even three
pairs. In addition, it is useful to remember that this standard is symmetric, ie,
the maximum data rate both "upstream" and "downstream" is the same. Compare this
to ADSL (which also needs just one line!).
Where ADSL utilizes unoccupied frequencies and
averts conflict with analog voice frequencies, SDSL takes over the whole line.
SDSL eliminates analog voice capabilities in favor of full-duplex data
transmission. No splitter, no analog voice-nothing but data. As a decent
alternative to T1, SDSL has gotten a fair amount of attention from Competitive
Local Exchange Carriers.
The benefits of Business DSL for Internet Access are numerous. SDSL is a
symmetric technology that is perfectly adapted to most business needs. SDSL
transceivers are currently based on HDSL technology (2B1Q line code), thereby
making SDSL a mature technology. SDSL enables the service providers to reach a
large number of subscribers as it can operate at a variety of data rates and
therefore make the full use of the distance reach.
SDSL and Voice Over Data
SDSL is a low latency technology and is ideally suited for Voice over Data
applications such as Voice over IP and Voice over ATM.

SDSL can also transport a mix of traditional 64Kbps voice channels and data.
This enables SDSL to address the business needs of both voice and data
connectivity.
